ABOUT
OUR STORY
We could talk all day about how flawed the US education system is, in particular when it comes to American history curriculum. But, there seem to be 2 issues that stand out:
#1: The Facts — Both public and private schools use textbooks riddled with revisionist history, misinformation, and all too many stories and voices left out and white-washed.
#2: The Civics — While the "memorize and regurgitate" method of teaching is coming under increased scrutiny these days, US History classes rarely include how to participate in our political system and how to engage in political discourse—skills that are a must-have.
Our education system does not teach us how to a. develop our political consciousness and b. talk about politics. All too often, adolescents come of age into a political identity based on a white-washed alteration of American history or from the elders of the community they were socialized into. With politics being considered a taboo subject not to be discussed at the dinner table, young adults are seldom given the opportunity to interrogate their growing political consciousness, how to engage with their peers about political and social subjects, and how to respectfully disagree with one another. As politics affects us all every day and differences of opinion are an inevitable fact of life, Pass the Bullhorn was developed to give adolescents a platform to critically engage with politics and prepare themselves for what it means to participate in our civil society as an adult.
The aim of this platform is to elevate the political consciousness and political conversations of the next generation of leaders, activists, and change-makers.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to provide soon-to-be and young voters with the education and skills needed to engage in our political system. We seek to challenge the idea that politics and activism is not for everyone by opening the conversation to all. Our goal is to lay out a path for teenagers to become politically aware and active participants in our governmental system by giving them the tools and spaces needed to develop a core understanding of our government structure, to envision and articulate their political views, and to build the skills to use their voice.
OUR VISION
Though our generation does not yet hold many seats of power, we hold the keys to the future and we are ushering in a new generation of voters. We envision a generation of young people who are prepared, educated, and empowered to actively and productively participate in our government and social systems. We strive for a world different from this one—of truth and fact, not misinformation; of hope and empathy, not divisiveness. And, we hope that young voters will vote with compassion and vote with an informed view of the world and our country. We want to uplift the voices of the next generation and provide a springboard for the next generation of change-makers.
